Pearls have been highly regarded as gems for thousands of years. Regarded as a symbol of wealth and stuff of many legends and myths.   About 100 years ago a Japanese pearl farmer developed a process whereby a small piece of shell could be inserted into living akoya oysters. These are then put back in the water and the pearl forming process begins.
